The 2019 World Ski Championships will be one of the most spectacular competitions in winter sports. This tournament is uncompromising and unpredictable, and the best athletes on the planet demonstrate their fighting spirit on the way to winning prestigious trophies. Today, the competition presented cannot boast a huge audience, such as matches or races. Nevertheless, the broadcasts of the event, which will be shown in Russia by the Eurosport2 TV channel, will attract tens of thousands of ski fans to their screens.

Where will it take place?

The 2019 World Cross-Country Championships will take place in Seefeld, Austria, from February 20 to March 3. The city will host this competition for the second time in history (the first took place in 1985). Initially, the following applications applied to host the world championship:

  • Oberstdorf (Germany);
  • Planica (Slovenia);
  • Alma-Ata (Kazakhstan).

In the final vote, FIS (International Ski Federation) officials gave preference to Seefeld. Oberstdorf, who had previously been in the lead for three rounds, lost by only 1 vote. The relatively long period of time during which the country did not host large-scale competitions under the auspices of the FIS played in favor of the Austrian application.

What races will it include?

The World Ski Championship will divide the stages of the 2018-2019 Ski World Cup into two parts. The Cup schedule will be approved only in May, but it is already known that there are no races on Russian territory (due to the doping scandal caused by the “McLaren report”). The 2019 World Cup final will be held in Quebec, Canada, where the sport is extremely popular.

As for the regulations of the World Ski Championships, they remained unchanged. Spectators can still expect such disciplines as:

  • sprint (women's and men's);
  • skiathlon (women's and men's);
  • mass start, women, 30 km;
  • mass start, men, 50 km;
  • team sprint (women's and men's);
  • women's 10 km individual race;
  • Individual race for men 15 km.

The team relay races for women - 4 x 5 km and men's 4 x 10 km - deserve special attention. The best representatives from FIS countries compete in this sport. The most intense struggle is taking place between representatives of Norway, Finland, Sweden, the USA, Canada and Russia.

Women's tournament favorites

After leaving big sport Marit Bjorgen's title of cross-country skiing queen remains vacant. Several athletes are capable of showing good results at the upcoming World Cup. Among them:

  • Krista Parmakoski;
  • Heidi Weng;
  • Stina Nilsson;
  • Maiken Caspersen Falla et al.

We should also talk about Charlotte Calla. It's the Swede who's on this moment looks the most preferable to her rivals, especially in her favorite discipline, skiathlon. In the speed skating races during the previous season, Charlotte had no competitors, and it is unlikely that they will appear during the year. All this suggests that at least one gold medal the Swede will take it at the World Championships.

There is a lot of talk around the return of ski racing prima Teresa Johaug. The Norwegian looked good at the World Cup stages, but health problems and decline physical fitness forced her to pause her career for a short time. As a result, the Norwegian missed the Olympics in Pyeongchang, but got the chance to fully prepare for the upcoming season. If Teresa manages to get into optimal condition for the World Cup, she will probably win several medals.

In the women's relay races, Norway no longer looks like the undisputed favorite. The presence of at least two weak stages does not guarantee the team even getting into the top three, although the Norwegians have a good chance of winning bronze. In terms of sporting potential, ski racers from Sweden and the USA look good. According to experts, it is they who will fight among themselves for first place in the protocol.

Men's tournament favorites

In men's cross-country skiing, several athletes are in the running for medals at the 2019 World Championships. First of all, it is worth including Martin Jonsrud Sundby, who has dominated the World Cup for several seasons. He regularly fails at the starts of the planetary championship, as well as the Olympics. Whether Sundby will be able to concentrate on the upcoming tournament remains a mystery to all fans of this sport.

Among other contenders for competition medals, we note:

  • Alexa Harvey (retires 2019)
  • Dario Cologne;
  • Sergei Ustyugov;
  • Emila Iversena;
  • Ivo Niskanena;
  • Markus Hellner;
  • Maurice Monifica;
  • Alexey Poltoranin and others.

Russia's main hope in cross-country skiing (besides Sergei Ustyugov) is Alexander Bolshunov. The athlete's favorite discipline is sprint, so only in it can one count on a podium. However, competition in the sprint increases every year, so Bolshunov will have to demonstrate all his skill and will to win to win a World Championship medal.

Separately, it is necessary to highlight the figure of Johannes Kläbo. Just a few years ago, the Norwegian was perceived as a talented junior who could compete with eminent leaders. Now many call Clabo the king, who for many years has staked out the title of number one athlete in cross-country skiing. The Norwegian can prove his uniqueness directly at the 2019 World Championships. He has good chances for medals both in the sprint and in the team relay, where Norway also plays a dominant role.

Thus, the World Ski Championships will start on February 20, 2019 in Seefeld, Austria. The tournament program includes several spectacular disciplines in which the best athletes will compete for medals. Fans can expect intense emotions, a battle of nerves, overtaking and falling. Don't miss the performances of the best skiers on the planet trying to write their names in the history of world sports.

Among the most spectacular events winter species sports include cross-country skiing. Here there is almost always unpredictability and uncertainty until the very finish. It’s just that the audience cannot demonstrate the required volume. But he watches live broadcasts on TV a large number of sports fans. At the time of the World Ski Championships, a specific city around the planet is selected where great athletes will be able to compete for the title of the best. The 2019 championship was no exception, where there were several competitors. But still, the world organization chose only one, which was Seefeld in Austria, but more on that later and in more detail.

History of events

In 2013, from February 20 to March 3, the Italian city of Val di Fiemme hosted cross-country skiing athletes seeking the title of world champion. This city organized the competition for the third time. At that time, for the first time in the program there were mixed competitions between ski jumping teams. As a result, Norway stood at the top of the podium in the medal standings with an incredible gap from second place in France and Russia, which took third place in the overall standings with two gold medals and three bronze.

From February 18 to March 1, 2015, the 50th World Ski Championships took place in Falun, Sweden. It is worth noting that this city is almost among the record holders for the number of World Cups, since it was already the fifth time that it was organized at that time. sport's event. True, the last time it happened was in 1993. Here, too, there were no equals to the Norwegian squad, where Northug and Bjergen played a significant role. Following them in the medal standings were Germany and Sweden, respectively.

In 2017, the honor of hosting the world ski championship was given to the city of Lahti in Finland. The opening took place on February 22, and the last day was March 5. Many people like this city in terms of organization and route, since the World Championships are being held here for the seventh time. But the number of fans was very small, about 180 thousand. Norway again held first place in the overall medal standings. But now a German squad approached them very close. The third place was secured by Russia, which won 2 gold medals and 4 silver.

Select city

The Congress of the International Ski Federation, which took place in Barcelona, Spain from June 1 to June 6, 2014, decided to determine the winner for the right to host the World Championships in 2019 from February 19 to March 3 Austrian Seefeld. This decision was approved by the FIS Council. This is the second time they have been granted this right. The first time such an event occurred was back in 1985.

The main competitors were the German Oberstdorf, the Kazakh Alma-Ata and the Slovenian Planica. In the first round of voting, Oberstdorf snuck into first place with a 2-point lead over the next place, Austria (8 versus 6). Planica is in third place. Consequently, the Kazakhstan city immediately dropped out of the drawing, without receiving a single vote.

The second round did not change anything in terms of the number of points scored. The German city was among the leaders. With only three votes, Slovenian Planica was eliminated. The third round became decisive and the opinion of the Congress participants changed somewhat. Oberstdorf again received 8 votes. But everyone else moved beyond Austria. Consequently, the lead is 1 point and Seefeld becomes the unexpected winner.

The main reason that played a decisive role in choosing the Austrian city was the long period of not hosting the World Championships under the auspices of the FIS.

Criticism by route

Immediately after the Austrian city was chosen as the venue for the 2019 World Ski Championships, a lot of criticism rained down on it. The main attention was paid to the quality of the tracks, which leaves much to be desired. This is exactly the opinion expressed by Norwegian skier Martin Jonsrud Sundby. He took third place in the mass start free style 15 km at the World Cup stage in the specified city in 2018.

“As far as I know, we will use these tracks at the 2019 World Cup. Now it's 2018 and it's modern approach- they want a massive finish, and for the tension to remain throughout the entire distance.

Personally, I would prefer a good climb followed by a descent and then see who is the fastest. For myself, this season I found a start where I can go at a pace all the time - this is the marathon in Holmenkollen. And the rest of the races will be the same as the mass start in Seefeld,” Sundby noted.

Competition regulations

The events at the 2019 World Ski Championships are no different from those previously held. All disciplines remain identical, which include:

  • Sprint among men and women. In addition, there will be a sprint between all participating teams, which will have the right to compete for the title of the best on the planet.
  • Women's and men's skiathlon.
  • Mass start for participants of the 2019 World Championship. For women, the distance is set at 30 km, for men it is slightly longer - 50 km.
  • Individual race. The distance for men is 15 km, and for women a little less - 10 km.
  • Relay race national teams. A total of 4 participants are allowed from each team. Women will have to ski 5 kilometers each, while men will have to ski twice as long - 10 km.

As for the last discipline, the teams of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia are most often among the leaders.

Contenders of the women's podium

When it comes to the favorites for the 2019 World Ski Championships, the men and women should be looked at first, but strictly separately.

Now many can breathe a sigh of joy, as Marit Bjorgen has retired from acting. Instead, you can find a large number of contenders for the leader in cross-country skiing, whom we will meet at the World Championships in 2019. Among them, Heidi Weng, Kirsa Parmasconi, Stina Nilsson and some others have excellent chances.

If we take a separate discipline like skiathlon, the undisputed leader here is Charlotte Kalla. Last season she did not find any competitors. It is unlikely that there will be enough time for the athletes to carefully prepare in order to surpass it. In a normal outcome, only she is capable of collecting several medals.

The women's relay cannot single out the Norwegian team as a contender for gold medals, which is taking more and more first places from year to year. Experts are inclined to believe that the United States or Sweden have a better chance of leadership in this discipline.

Men's favorites

It is very difficult to name a specific person in men's cross-country skiing, since there are several athletes at once. Much attention is paid to Martin Jonsrud Sundby. It is he who most often finds himself on the pedestal. But he fails many starts, unexpectedly for the fans. Many fans harbor doubts about whether he will be able to make it to the 2019 World Ski Championships.

His main competitors include Ustyugov, Kolonya, Iversen, and Niskanen. In the year of the World Cup, Alex Harvey will retire and will try to surprise the fans. Klabo stands out in a separate category, who was able to move from a talented junior to a full-fledged professional athlete. He can prove himself in the sprint and relay race of the national team.
