In women's volleyball, the American, Brazilian, Cuban, Russian, Chinese, Italian, and Japanese teams are very strong. Between the seven of them they won 12 gold medals!

The latest edition of the Women's Volleyball World Championship ended with the triumph of US volleyball players. The North American women convincingly defeated the Chinese in the final match with a score of 3:1. Based on the results of the 17th draw, the quartet best teams-participants looked like this:

  1. China;
  2. Brazil;
  3. Italy.

The fifth and sixth places were shared by the Russians and the Dominicans, the seventh and eighth positions were occupied by the Serbian and Japanese athletes, and the ninth and tenth by the Turkish and German athletes.

Russia at the 2018 Women's Volleyball World Cup

The domestic squad will begin the fight for medals in Group C. The Russians will compete against Americans, Koreans, Azerbaijanis, Thailand and volleyball players from Trinidad and Tobago. The sextet is quite smooth. Obviously, the struggle for first place will unfold between Russian, American and Korean volleyball players.

The calendar of games for the Women’s Volleyball World Championship 2018 for our girls is as follows:

  • 09/29/2018: Russia – Trinidad and Tobago;
  • 09/30/2018: Russia – Thailand;
  • 02/10/2018: Russia – Azerbaijan;
  • 03/10/2018: Russia – South Korea;
  • 04/10/2018: USA – Russia.

Our women have always been one of the leaders in world volleyball. It is no coincidence that the Soviet team has the most gold medals – five. The peak of the USSR's power occurred in the 50s - 70s of the 20th century.

The successes of the domestic team are not so significant. But she also has something to brag about. The Russians have two World Cup gold and three bronze medals. The highest medals were won by our girls in 2006 and 2010.

The last draw of the tournament was unsuccessful for the Russian squad. The fight for gold ended for them on the approaches to the playoffs - at the 3rd group stage. Many of the girls who will come to Japan are participants in the unsuccessful World Cup four years ago. Therefore, fans can rest assured that they will have something to prove!

Russian national team composition
Binders: Evgenia Startseva (captain), Tatiana Romanova. Diagonal: Natalia Goncharova, Daria Malygina.
Finishers: Irina Voronkova, Ksenia Parubets, Anna Kotikova, Olga Biryukova.
Blocking: Irina Koroleva, Irina Fetisova, Ekaterina Lyubushkina, Ekaterina Efimova.
Libero: Daria Talysheva, Alla Galkina.

Our women's team is one of the most titled teams in history. Russians have won two of the last three world championships. But after the triumph at the 2015 European Championship, the national team fell on hard times. In 2016 there was a crushing defeat from the Serbs in the quarterfinals of the Olympics, the next year there were unsuccessful performances at the Grand Prix, the World Champions Cup and 0:3 from Turkey in the quarterfinals of the European Championship.

The once formidable Russian national team is no longer afraid. And the time has come to return prestige.

Format

It would be naive to assume that our team will easily forget the last few seasons and immediately win the World Championship. Life is not a movie, and even if Russian women now, as expected in classic Hollywood films, start training at night, it will not work. You can fly off the top in an instant, but it takes time to climb back up again.

The official goal, which was announced before the start of the year, was to reach the semifinals. This is more objective at this stage. After a series of failures, returning to the top four teams in the world would be a tangible step forward. Although this will not be easy. China, USA, Brazil and Serbia are very powerful and beating at least one of these teams for any other team will be a real achievement.

The fact is that our girls will come out in the second group stage, there is no doubt. Another question is that this needs to be done with minimal losses - as at the men's world championship, all points go to the second stage. In the sextet with us: Trinidad and Tobago, Thailand, Azerbaijan, Korea and the USA.

Obviously, the favorite here is the Americans, the current world champions. Head coach our team noted that both Asian teams are dangerous. Although the Russians, of course, need to beat them.

In the second round, groups A and D, as well as B and C are combined. This means that at the next stage we will get China, Italy, Turkey and, most likely, Bulgaria. Unless, of course, the Canadians or Cubans shoot, which, in general, is not excluded. And out of all this splendor, only three teams will make it to the Final Six. On paper, everything looks like the USA and China will advance further, but Russians, Italians and Turkish women will fight for the third spot. But again, this is not solitaire and there are no guarantees that this is exactly what the final layout will turn out to be. In sports, especially women's, everything is possible.

Compound

Let's at least remember last championship peace. Four years ago, the Dominicans reached the Final Six. Who was waiting for them there? But they still fought with the Chinese women, losing to the future Olympic champions Rio is only a tiebreaker. I would like to believe that this time the Russian team will be the opening team.

Unfortunately, Tatyana Kosheleva will not help the team. The experienced finisher has not yet regained her condition after a severe injury. At the recent tournament in Montreux, the team lost Natalya Krotkova, who had gained excellent condition. She has already been operated on in Germany. Ekaterina Pankova takes care of health and personal affairs.

However, there are those on the team who know what big victories are and how to achieve them. Natalia Goncharova is a world-class diagonal. There is Evgenia Startseva, who was the main team at the victorious 2010 World Cup. , Irina Koroleva and Ksenia Parubets were in starting lineup in the final match of the 2015 European Championship, which ended in triumph. The coaching staff headed by Pankov has great experience.

So, although Russia is not the favorite, it can make some noise in Japan. In terms of composition, our team is no weaker than the Dominican Republic in 2014. So why not reach the semi-finals? We believe in the best and hope that the World Cup will give us long-awaited victories over top teams. We all miss them very much.

On June 26, the sixth Women's World Cup opened in Berlin. A similar event has been held under the auspices of FIFA since 1991. FIFA experts expect that by 2012 the number of women playing football will be equal to men. Already, about 40 million women in the world are involved in this sport.
