The main sensation of the qualifying tournament with a minus sign was, which took only fourth place in its qualifying group and did not even get into the play-offs.
The Serbian national team was an unpleasant surprise – the team, made up of very decent players, also did not hit the joints. Of course, the not entirely unambiguous UEFA sanctions that followed after the match with Albania played their role, anyway, two victories for such a team is too little.
The Russian team did it again: two defeats from the Austrians, a home draw with the Moldovans, but, in the end, the team pulled together and went straight to the final part from the second place, ahead of the Swedish team.
Play-offs

I will say right away that the group stage was not impressive. Abundance, to put it mildly, not the most strong teams, made it possible for the favorites not to strain too much, and the probability of leaving the group from 3rd place led to the fact that many teams sought, first of all, not to lose, not really thinking about winning.
Group A
The French national team played hard, it was clear that the players were under pressure from the home walls and the expectations of the fans associated with them. IN starting match against Romania, Dimitri Payet scored the winning goal only in the 89th minute, and the Albanians were completely squeezed in stoppage time.
Switzerland did not show itself in any particular way, but minimum win over the Albanians and two draws allowed her to finish second in the group. An incomprehensible metamorphosis took place with - the team fought with dignity against France, took a point in the match with Switzerland, but then limply and completely on business lost to the Albanian team. Although the victory in that match brought the Romanians to the 1/2 finals.
As for the Albanian national team, apart from diligence and fighting qualities, the team did not show itself in any way. But at this Euro this team was not alone. It is only strange that we are still surprised at the decline in the quality of football at the European Championship.
Group B
Before the start of the tournament, I thought that the key match for our team would be the second round match against Slovakia. With the British, one could count on points, if only because they had never won the opening matches of the European championships.
I couldn’t believe in a victory over Wales - physically powerful teams have always been problematic for, and now Wales has not only fighters, but world-class players in the person of Aaron Ramsey and Gareth Bale. But the Slovakian team, as I thought, could be beaten - the composition of the Russian team still allowed us to hope for it.
As a result, I lost three times with our favorite team as a forecaster: a draw with the British was obtained, as they say, not thanks to, but in spite of, we lost to the Slovaks completely on business, and from Wales we suffered a crushing defeat.
In general, about the game, so I don’t want to repeat myself. Well, at least the fans were pleased - in mass fights with the British, ours, judging by media reports, won.
And the group was quite deservedly won by the Wales team. Competent and trained team, which includes not only Bale and Ramsey. Goaltender Hennessy, team captain Ashley Williams, linebacker Joe Allen are all top notch players.
By the way, the British could well be left with two points, because their victory over Wales was achieved despite the course of the match, just who replaced Jamie Vardy and Daniel Sturridge managed to be at the right time in the right place.
Group C
Disappointed her fans. In the opening match, the team gave a real fight to the Germans, who were rescued several times by Manuel Neuer. The outcome of the match was unclear until the very end - after all, Bastian Schweinsteiger scored the second goal in stoppage time.
However, after that, the Ukrainian footballers mediocrely lost to both the Northern Ireland and the Poles, becoming the only team that never managed to hit the opponents' gates.
In this group, the costs of the idea of expanding teams began to be clearly seen. Northern Irish football players for the match of the third round with Germany came out with the expectation of a minimal defeat. It gave them zero goal difference with three points scored, which made their chances of qualifying from the group quite high. With the previous format of the tournament, this was simply impossible.
In the end, it turned out that way - the German national team won 1-0, and the Northern Irish goalkeeper Michael McGovern made an incredible number of saves. However, the Germans played without much spark, as if in training. The Polish national team played very rationally - two minimal clean sheets and a tactical goalless draw in the second round against Germany.

In the last round, the Croats won a strong-willed victory over the Spaniards and took first place in the group, and the Turkish team was able to defeat the Czech team, although this did not help the Turks in the end.
Group E
In the first round, the Italian team played great, having far from the strongest squad. In a match with the promoted Belgians, he completely outplayed his counterpart Mark Wilmots. The Italians played clearly, it was clear that each player knows what to do. Most of the Belgians' shots were blocked by the defenders, and where the ball reached the goal, Buffon stepped in. And the counterattacks of the Italian team turned out to be just exemplary.
Having defeated the Swedes 1-0 in the second match (Eder scored a goal in the 88th minute), the Italian team secured the first place in the group ahead of schedule. The Belgians, having won two victories, became the second.
As for the national teams of Sweden and Ireland, they were initially predicted to fight for third place. Basically, these two mediocre teams somewhat similar, but there was one difference - the Swedes have Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
But at this particular tournament, he didn’t help the team in any way, and the Irish were lucky with the tournament layout - in the last round they were opposed by unmotivated Italy, and Antonio Conte let the main players rest. was able to take advantage of this - Robbie Brady scored the only goal in the 85th minute.
Group F
In this group, the situation was, regrettably, the most confusing, and contrary to expectations, the favorites of the group, the Portuguese, were at the bottom of the table and had a great time qualifying tournament Austrians.
