In February 2012, the British Boxing Council ordered Fury to make a mandatory title defense against David Price, Tyson refused and vacated the titles, preferring the prospect of fighting at a higher level. His next fight was for the Irish title against Martin Rogan, which took place in the capital Northern Ireland Belfast. This fight was very important for Fury, he wanted to prove that the Irish Olympic Committee made a mistake by not allowing him to compete in the Olympics, thereby depriving himself of Olympic gold.

In the seventh round, Fury had several clean hits on Cunningham, and at the end of the round he pinned him near the ropes. At the end of the fight, Fury and Cunningham were in the clinch, the Briton took advantage of the sluggishness of the referee and "dirty" turned Cunningham's head under his blow, and then sent him into a deep knockout with a short right hook. This defeat was the first early in Cunningham's career, until the seventh round he led on points on cards from two judges (57-55), the third was a draw (56-56). The fight had the status of qualifying for the fight with the IBF world champion.

In May 2013, it was reported that Fury was in talks to fight his compatriot David Haye.

On September 21, 2013, Haye announced that he had received a cut while sparring and included a photo to confirm with the post.
