Your bike is well designed, assembled, adjusted, so it is safe to use and meets the highest standards. With proper care, your FORWARD will delight you for many years to come. Due to the fact that different models FORWARD are equipped with various equipment, this manual provides general and specific information. If you have any questions about the model or part of your bike, please contact your dealer. Assembly and initial adjustment is done with special tools and requires skill and should therefore be done by an experienced dealer mechanic. Some operations can only be performed by a professional mechanic. Since a bicycle is a vehicle, safety rules cannot be neglected. The following chapter contains useful information to help you drive safely. Read this chapter before getting on your new FORWARD.

4 1. SAFETY 1. REMEMBER! Cycling is a potentially dangerous activity. 2. before each ride, check the bike for proper operation as described in the section when riding, use personal protective equipment. A helmet minimizes the chance of head injury, goggles protect your eyes from dust and insects, and gloves protect your hands if you fall. 4. Run over the rails at a right angle. 5. Do not use chainring combinations in which there is a significant chain distortion (for example, large front / large rear, or vice versa small star front / small rear). 6. When shifting, apply the minimum load on the pedals. Otherwise, the transmission resource as a whole is significantly reduced. 7. when shifting, do not try to shift into several gears at once. Switch gradually. 8. When riding, always take a pump and a spare tube (or repair kit) with you. Remember, riding with a flat tire will cause serious damage to the bike tire and tube. 9. To prevent theft, never leave your bike unattended. Never ride a broken bike. 2. 5 3. ASSEMBLING THE BIKE 1. take the bike out of the box and free it from the packing materials; 2. Install the front wheel. Make sure that the direction of the tire matches the direction of rotation, use the eccentric correctly. 3. adjust the steering column; 4. adjust the front brake; 5. install the pedals; 6. adjust the front derailleur; 7. stretch the connecting rod system; 8. adjust the rear brake; 9. adjust the rear derailleur; 10. pump up the wheels. The assembly of the bicycle must be carried out by qualified mechanics in a specialized workshop or at the place of sale. 3.1 INSTALLING THE WHEELS 1. If your bike is equipped with V-Brake type rim brakes, disengage the brake tie and move the brake levers apart (fig. 1). 2. Loosen the adjusting nut on the eccentric (Fig. 2), or the nuts on the wheel axle to such an extent that the wheel fits without resistance into the seats in the dropouts. 3. Tighten the nut on the eccentric turnbuckle and fix the wheel by turning the eccentric lever with the torque N/m (fig.3). If the wheel is attached to the frame with nuts, secure the wheel in the dropouts by tightening the nuts on the axle to N/m. 4. when installing the rear wheel on bicycles with one gear, it is necessary to ensure the necessary chain tension. Too little tension can cause the chain to come off the sprockets, too much tension can cause heavy travel and excessive chain wear. The normal tension should be such that its lower branch has a sag of 10-20mm, or when pulling the upper branch by hand, the deviation in the middle part is 20-25mm (Fig. 4). 7. When installing a rear wheel, the hub of which has a built-in brake (when braking is carried out by turning the pedals backwards), it is necessary to securely fix the brake lever of the hub on the lower left edge of the frame using an integrated earring or clamp (Fig. 5). 8. If the bike is equipped with V-Brake rim brakes, after installing the wheel, close the brake levers and couple the brake tie (fig. 6). Check the operation of the brake, if necessary, adjust the position of the brake shoes (p. 3.6). Do not try to fix the wheel by turning the quick release lever! It is strictly forbidden to use a bicycle with an unfixed brake tie (for V-brakes), or with an unattached rear hub brake lever! 5

ATTENTION!

Like any mechanical vehicle, every bicycle and its equipment has a limited lifespan due to wear and tear on the chassis and stress on the frame and equipment during use. The durability of individual parts and assemblies may be different and depends on their design, materials of manufacture, maintenance and nature of use.

Drops (impacts) can have an extreme impact on the bike and its components. Jumping, performing various tricks, frequent riding in difficult off-road conditions, rain, snow, long downhill runs, and any other extreme use of the bike can be dangerous as the stresses on the frame increase. extreme views sports and competitions on bicycles captured in the video are carried out by very experienced and professional riders on specially prepared equipment appropriate for this sport. Frequent and heavy loads lead to premature fatigue of materials or sudden failure of the frame and components of the bicycle, which in turn can lead to loss of control of the bicycle while riding and injury.

Have your bike inspected regularly. Scratches, cracks, dents, deformation of the frame, or areas of the frame that have changed color from the original are signs of severe use of the bicycle. Even though lighter frames and more expensive components last longer than cheap ones, they also require a lot of attention, since expensive bikes and their equipment need more thorough and frequent maintenance.

Remember that you are at greater risk of injury from extreme riding, even if your bike is designed for such use. Therefore, use special protection, including a certified bicycle helmet.

USE A HELMET
An unprotected head is at great risk of injury, even in the event of a light blow. Wear a comfortable helmet that fits snugly around your head and meets CE or CPSC safety standards. We also recommend wearing safety goggles and cycling clothing.

KEEP YOUR BIKE CAREFULLY BEFORE, DURING OR AFTER EACH RIDE

  • Keep your bike clean. Regularly clean your bike and its equipment from dirt, sand, especially after riding in difficult off-road conditions, rain, snow, slush, etc. Avoid using high pressure car washes.
  • Do not leave the bike outside for a long time under adverse weather conditions (rain, snow, direct sunlight, high humidity).
  • Use a suitable bike storage room. It is better to store a bicycle (for example, in winter) in a suspended state with half the pressure in the tires. Do not leave the bike in close proximity to sources of electromagnetic radiation (including electric motors), the operation of which adversely affects the condition of the rubber and the finish of the bike
  • Your bike is a relatively expensive item, so we recommend the following:

1. Write down the serial number of the bike.
2. Register the bike with law enforcement agencies.
3. Lock the bike with a secure lock.
4. Do not leave the bike unattended, even for a short time.

  • When storing the bike, shift gears to the smallest chainrings. This will reduce chain tension and relieve unnecessary pressure on the cranks and rear derailleur spring.
  • When driving, use the correct gear layout.
  • Protect your bike from unexpected damage. During parking (rest) place the bike off the road and make sure it does not fall, do not put the bike on its side on the rear derailleur.
  • Do not allow the handlebar or fork to hit the frame due to large steering turns.
  • Never change equipment, never change a suspension fork, or make any changes to the frame. All components and equipment of your bicycle are carefully selected by the manufacturer in accordance with the geometry of the bicycle frame and the conditions of its operation. Modifying any part of the bike could damage it and make it unsafe to ride. Please check with your dealer before changing anything. Any modification to the frame, fork, or hardware of your bicycle will result in denial of warranty service.

EVERY TIME BEFORE YOU START YOUR TRIP, YOU SHOULD CHECK THE FOLLOWING:

  • WHEELS CONDITION AND ALIGNMENT

In order to check whether the rim is straight or not, the wheel is correctly installed relative to the fork / frame, it is necessary to scroll each wheel of your bike and see how the rim moves relative to the brake pads or frame elements. If you find a problem with one or both wheels, contact your shop/bike shop.

  • TIRE PRESSURE AND CONDITION

Inflate the tube according to the pressure indicated on the side of the tire. The upper setting (maximum pressure) will give your bike a good ride on firm and level road surfaces. The lower value (minimum pressure) will provide you with comfort, good grip and off-road handling. Your weight and luggage weight also has great importance when pumping wheels. Lighter cyclists will probably get more comfort with low tire pressures, heavier riders with a larger load will need more chamber pressure.
Use hand pumps with a pressure gauge to determine tire pressure. Worn tires need to be replaced.

  • RELIABILITY AND CORRECT POSITION OF THE BRAKES

Press each brake lever to check how freely and smoothly the brake pads move and how the braking works. Brake pads should be parallel to the rim, fed in the center of the side wall of the rim, without touching the surface of the tires. The distance between the block and the side surface of the rim (when the brake lever is not pressed) should be 2-3 mm.

  • RELIABILITY OF FASTENING THE WHEELS

Your bike may be equipped with an eccentric mechanism. This mechanism allows you to quickly remove / install the wheel without tools. Make sure that the handle of this mechanism is in the CLOSE (closed) position and securely holds the wheels.

THE PERFORMANCE OF YOUR BICYCLE DEPENDS ON THE CONDITIONS OF USE AND REGULAR MAINTENANCE.

All maintenance and repair recommendations refer to the normal use of the bicycle. If the bicycle has been frequently used during rain, snow, etc. service and maintenance intervals must be shortened.

DESCRIPTION AND ADJUSTMENT OF INDIVIDUAL ASSOCIATIONS AND ELEMENTS OF THE BIKE

SADDLE
Before riding, you must set the correct height and position of the saddle. Set the saddle high enough so that the heel of the lowered foot just touches the pedal - the leg is straight, the pedal is at the very bottom of the turn in line with the seat tube. For most people, this will give the saddle height so that the knee will be slightly bent at the bottom of the pedal turn. This will also prevent you from wagging your hips with each turn of the crank. This is the optimal approximation for saddle height. You can then continue to adjust the saddle height more precisely to suit your preference and riding style. Seat height is fixed by a seat eccentric, which is installed in the upper part of the seat tube of the frame. The seat inclination is adjusted by a screw on the top of the seat. To do this, you must first loosen, then set the saddle, and then tighten the seat bolt nut.
Never extend the seatpost beyond the limit mark marked on it.

STEERING WHEEL
ATTENTION:
Handlebar height with an A-HEAD stem cannot be changed.

ATTENTION:
Adjustable stem. The handlebar of the bike is adjustable both in height and inclination, which allows the cyclist to take the most comfortable position.
Adjustment is made by means of a screw on the steering wheel stem. After setting the optimal height and angle of the steering wheel, fix its position by tightly tightening the screw.
It is best to set the handlebar and saddle at the same level or lower the handlebar a little lower.
We recommend setting the maximum distance from the saddle to the handlebars and the lowest position in which you feel comfortable (with an emphasis on COMFORTABLE).

PEDALS
The pedals are labeled "R" (right) and "L" (left). The pedal marked with an "L" has a left hand thread for the left crank, and the pedal marked with an "R" has a right hand thread for the right crank.
Before riding a bicycle, check that the pedals are secure. Some bikes are equipped with Shimano SPD type pedals, which require special cycling shoes.

CHAIN
The chain is used to transmit torque from the pedals to rear wheel. During operation, the chain must be kept clean and monitored for wear. A worn chain must be replaced. Long-term use of a worn chain causes more wear to the cassette sprockets and crank sprockets. When replacing a heavily worn chain, the cassette and cranks must also be replaced.
To ensure the normal operation of the drive, we recommend using SHIMANO chains. You also need to pay attention to the type of chain: HG and IG.
Chain type IG cannot be replaced by chain type HG. Clean the chain by special means- digrisers, or kerosene, after which it is lubricated with special lubricants. Lubrication should not be too much on the chain, in order to avoid accelerated contamination.

CONNECTING ROD SYSTEM
The crankset consists of a right and left crank, cartridge (axle with bearings) and pedals. The connecting rods are fixed on the axle. When buying a bicycle, the entire mechanism does not require additional settings.
If there is play in the connecting rods (not the carriage axle), immediately remove the protective caps and tighten the screw or nut until it stops. Untimely tightening of the bolts leads to breakage of the connecting rod.

GEAR SHIFT
The mechanism consists of a front derailleur that redirects the chain to one of the three chainrings of the crankset and a rear derailleur that redirects the chain to one of the seven (eight, nine) small sprockets on the rear wheel hub. Gearshift control levers (shifters) can be either combined with brake levers or separately. The right shifter controls rear shifting, the left shifter controls forward shifting.
Some bike models are equipped with a GRIP SHIFT control system, where instead of levers, a rotary shift mechanism on the handlebars is installed.

In order to reduce wear and increase the service life of the gear shift mechanism, sprockets and chain, we recommend gear shifting at the moment of minimum load.

When you buy a bike, the gearshift mechanism is set up and ready to go. During the break-in of the bicycle, it may be necessary to fine-tune the adjustment screw.
When shifting gears, the chain should move smoothly over the sprockets without sharp mechanical sounds. In case of problems with the gearshift mechanism, we recommend that you contact the workshop or the shop where you purchased the bike.

BRAKES
The bicycles are equipped with V-brake brakes with brake levers attached to the fork (feathers). They are highly efficient. On road (road) bicycles, caliper brakes are used, which does not reduce their effectiveness. The brake levers are mounted on the steering wheel: the left one is for the front brake, and the right one is for the rear.
Since the mountain bike has a shortened base, in order to avoid throwing over the handlebars when braking, especially during descents, we recommend that you apply more force to the rear brake (right brake lever), and only slow down with the front brake.
When you buy a bike, the brakes are installed in the working position and provide reliable operation.

ATTENTION:
Operate the bike only after making sure that the brakes are working properly. Have any faults repaired by a qualified technician at a repair shop.
Brake pads wear out due to friction, which reduces the distance between the pads and the wheel rim (normal distance 2 - 3 mm).
Small wear can be compensated by adjusting the position of the pads with the adjusting screws. Continued use of heavily worn pads leads to premature wear of the rim - so they must be replaced in a timely manner.

WHEELS
Most bikes have wheel sizes (diameter) 26” (559mm) on mountain bikes and 28” (622mm) on road bikes. The wheel bushings are equipped with eccentrics, which makes it possible, if necessary, to quickly and easily remove and install the wheel. To ensure safety while riding, the wheels must be securely fastened to the frame (fork) and properly centered. In this case, the operation of the rim brakes will be most effective.
The tire pressure must correspond to the value indicated on the tire, as well as the type of terrain on which the bike is operated: on the roads 3 - 4 atmospheres, off-road 2.5 - 3.5. Also on some tires, an arrow indicates the direction of its movement.

ATTENTION:
In most cases, bikes are not equipped with all the accessories so that you can participate in road traffic. They are intended for operation outside public road communications. Therefore, if necessary, the bike can be equipped with a headlight / flasher, fenders, trunk, bike computer, etc.

After 50 km of run, but no later than 3 weeks, provide a bicycle for warranty inspection in order to control components and parts and adjust mechanisms.
Defects resulting from non-compliance with the above condition are not covered under warranty.

Bike Larsen: reviews

Consumer reviews of this series are mixed. This is not surprising, since the manufacturer presents the widest selection of models, ranging from children's and pleasure inexpensive bicycles to multi-speed mountain models.

Many consumers note the reliability of the frame and the ease of operation of the bike. Among the advantages: strength, ease of fit, original design, big choice color range. The disadvantages of some owners include not always good chain tension on single-speed modifications, a quiet bell sound and a simple body kit. However, there are not so many complaints about mountain models, since they are equipped with the Japanese Shimano shifting system, which is considered one of the best in the world.

Finally

The brand in question was created in Finland, production has been established in China and Russia. Larsen bicycles have gained popularity among domestic consumers due to their reliability, original design and wide range. At the same time, bikes of this brand are leaders in terms of the combination of quality and price indicators. Among the models presented, you can choose an option for a child from three years old, an adult active person who loves extreme sport. Also in the collection there are options for measured city trips and tourism. Manufacturers have not forgotten about the better half of humanity. For women there are universal walking modifications and Mountain bikes targeting young girls.

Have you just received a long-awaited bike from a transport company? Now you have to assemble and configure it! Using the 2011 Giant Cypress city bike as an example, all the nuances of assembling a bike from scratch are considered - from unpacking to setting up switches. If you have never assembled a bike before, I strongly recommend taking it to the nearest bike workshop - save a lot of time and nerves. If you still want to do it yourself - this article is for you;)

Unpacking and installing the main elements of the bike

This is what the box with the bike looks like when it comes from the factory. All bikes usually come with a crankset, chain, rear and front derailleurs, rear wheel, brakes and steering column.

Steering wheel, seat, front wheel, pedals, reflectors and other small things are packed separately.

To assemble the setup, you will need a number of tools:

  • hexagons (4, 5, 6 mm), but rather a set,
  • wrench 15 (for tightening the pedals),
  • key for 10,
  • crosshead screwdriver,
  • pliers (for crimping the cable),
  • nippers (for cutting the cable).

We take the bike out of the box. With wire cutters or powerful scissors, we cut off all the plastic clamps and remove the packaging. Be careful - at this stage it is easy to damage the paintwork of the frame.

First fix the saddle on seatpost. To do this, unscrew the mount on the seatpost with a 6mm hexagon, install it in the grooves of the saddle frame, close the bracket on top and twist it. This clever design also allows you to move the saddle back and forth and adjust the angle of inclination. Now it’s enough just to tighten the bolt, and it will be more convenient to make settings on the assembled bike.

We fix the reflector as close as possible to the saddle.

We lower the entire structure into the seat tube to the end and fix it with an eccentric clamp. If it closes too easily, then open it all the way, tighten the tightening wheel and try to close it again. If it does not close, on the contrary, weaken it.

Next, we are engaged in the removal of the steering wheel and the steering wheel. It happens differently on different bikes: either the stem is already fastened to the steering wheel, or not. In either case, the offset is set first. When installing the stem and handlebar, pay attention to the shifter and brake cables - they should not be tangled. Pay attention to the vertical marks on the stem - this is the maximum possible lifting height.

There is an important bolt hiding under this little plug! Using a 5 or 6 hexagon, the stem is fixed in the steering column, and the steering wheel is adjustable in height.

Let's take the front wheel. First you need to correctly install the eccentric (it is in the box with small things). The photo shows the correct position of all elements. Pay attention to the springs - they are located with a narrow part inside, i.e. to the wheel.

We remove the plug and spring from one side of the eccentric (from the one where there is no lever) and insert the axle into the front wheel hub. The question may arise, which side to insert it? Just look at which side it is installed on the rear wheel (usually on the left) and do it by analogy.

Next, insert the wheel into the fork. It is necessary to “unfasten” the front brake of the bicycle in advance (in the case of rim brakes) or remove the elastic band from it (usually in the factory packaging it is fixed with an elastic band or a tie).

It is most convenient to tighten the eccentric by approaching the bike from the front. In this case, it is possible to monitor whether the wheel is centered. Tightening is done as follows: turn the wheel on the left clockwise and try to close the lever. If it closes very easily, fold it back and spin the wheel again until the eccentric closes with effort. You don’t need to overdo it, otherwise you can break the eccentric!

Now you can pump up the wheels. The recommended pressure is always indicated on the tires in psi and bar. Bar = atmosphere. Please note: the pressure in the bicycle wheels must be from 3 atmospheres and above. 3.5 is the best option. 2.2, like cars, is no good. During operation, periodically check the pressure in the wheels - this is a guarantee of the absence of "eights".

Install the pedals. The photo shows that each pedal is signed as L or R. Sometimes stickers are still molded. L (Left) - left, R (Right) - right. Be careful: the pedals have different threads! Both pedals are twisted "in motion" of the bicycle, i.e. left to the left (counterclockwise) and right to the right (clockwise).

First, we twist them with our hands, and then we tighten them with a key by 15.

If the chain is not in place, it can easily be returned there. To do this, press the foot of the rear derailleur and the chain weakens. Now you can simply pick it up with your hand and put it on one of the front stars.

Installation and adjustment of the front brake; adjustment of both brakes

Now let's install the front brake. Find this curved tube in the box. You need to thread the front brake cable into it so that the wide part is at the top, and the narrow tip at the bottom is closer to brake levers(on the next photo).

We do as in the photo. The rubber band must be put on before you screw the cable. An elastic band is needed to protect the cable from dirt.

Now we loosen the bolt and start the cable there.

We compress the levers so that 2-3 mm remain from the pads to the rim. and tighten the bolt (without fanaticism, otherwise the cable will start to "push").

We leave a small part of the cable (5-7 cm.), Cut the rest with wire cutters (very good wire cutters are needed, otherwise the wire will fluff up at the end). Next, put on the tip and clamp it with pliers. If suitable tools are not available, take this step later. But don't put it off for long - the cable may "fluff" and you will have to change it.

Now you need to adjust the brakes. It would be good to devote a separate article to such a difficult issue, but now I will try to briefly describe the adjustment process.

The precise operation of the brakes consists of many nuances. First, spin the wheel (after inflating to the recommended pressure) - is there a figure eight? If it is, then it needs to be corrected. This is best done by an experienced master or look for an article on eliminating eights on the Internet. If everything is in order, we move on.

When assembled, the brake pads should be at equal distances from the rim. This is achieved by tensioning the cable - you can loosen the bolt with which you fastened the cable and pull it harder. And there is also a "lamb" - it is located right next to the brake handle - they can also tighten or loosen the cable. Never unscrew it all the way! The pads themselves should be parallel to the rim. Check if this is the case. If not, you need to loosen the bolt that secures them and adjust their position (see photo). You can, for example, apply the brake (then the pads will be pressed parallel to the rim) and immediately tighten the bolts.

Now we press the brake lever and watch how the brake levers converge. And they must converge at the same time! Look at the video.

If, when you press the brake lever, one lever presses the block faster than the other, you need to make adjustments with special screws (see photo). The setting is as follows: select the lever where the block is pressed against the rim faster and stronger and tighten the screw on this side clockwise by one or half a turn. Click and see if the situation changes. Usually the pads begin to press against the rim at the same time after adjusting with one screw. If not, then turn the screw on the other lever (where the pad is further from the rim) counterclockwise one - half a turn. Continue the described steps until you achieve the result, as in the video. The same procedure must be done with the rear brake.

Rear and front derailleur adjustment

Now it remains to configure the switches and soon it will be possible to go for the first test drive. Adjustment of the switches must begin from the rear. The front is usually well adjusted from the factory. To adjust, you'll need a stand to put your rear wheel on, or an assistant to lift the bike up by the saddle so you can pedal and see how it works.

First, check if the rear derailleur requires tuning. To do this, set on the front derailleur the first (smallest star) and shift gears one by one on the back while pedaling. If the chain does not rise or fall properly on the sprockets, adjustment is required.

You need to start by adjusting the spring tension in yourself O m rear derailleur (or make sure it is set correctly from the factory). To do this, set the front and rear derailleurs to the first star (number 1 on the derailleur knobs). Those. in front it is the smaller star of the three, and in the back it is b O the smallest of seven (or eight, nine). Spin the pedals to get the chain on the right stars. Now pay attention to the screws H (High) and L (Low) on the rear derailleur. H - high gears, for example, the seventh; Low - lowered, for example the first one.

Since we have set it to first gear (lower), our attention should be drawn to screw L. Before we turn it (or maybe not at all), we need to make sure that the rear foot of the switch is exactly opposite the first star ( see photo). In the photo below, the chain is on the second star so that you can see the warp more clearly. The chain must be on the first star!

If all goes well, you're in luck! If not, turn screw L to one side or the other. You should see the switch tab begin to move slowly to the left or right. You know the task - the stars in the switch foot must lie in the same plane with the first star of the cassette. After adjusting the derailleur with screw L, set the rear and front derailleur to the last chainrings and repeat the procedure with screw H.

Now let's take a look at the chain tension. If the chain does not rise well from 7 to 1, then you need to slightly tighten the cable. If it does not go down well from 1 to 7, then the cable will be pulled and it needs to be loosened. Necessary adjustments can be made using the adjustment wheel on the rear derailleur. Cr at turn counterclockwise - tighten the cable, clockwise - loosen. Again, don't over-twist it or the wheel will just pop out of the switch. If the desired effect could not be achieved, then you need to loosen the nut by 9 holding the cable, tighten / loosen the cable and fix it again.

The front derailleur is configured in a similar way. Only with H and L screws, the opposite is true: a small star is an L screw, a large one is H.

I hope everything worked out for you! If not, don't despair. Look for specialized articles on the Internet, or seek help from an experienced bike master. We, in turn, will try to make detailed articles for each stage. Good luck with your setup and happy travels ;)

Hello! What is included in this bike's warranty? I bought a child, and in him one thing will break, then another! All nuts need to be tightened, they are very weak. I bought it in April 2018. The pedal broke, the thread itself, now you need to buy and change the entire pedal holder! I'm disappointed with your brand! I won't be buying these things from you again!
