Last year, he beat the Russians on the ski track, and now he gave an interview to SE. Sergey Ustyugov Sergey Ustyugov sport

Sergey Ustyugov is an athlete who, despite his rather young age, is already being called one of the most promising skiers in the world. Indeed, Sergei literally burst into professional sports and, judging by everything, is aimed at serious achievements.

Childhood and youth

Ustyugov was born in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, in the small village of Mezhdurechensky on April 8, 1992. In one of the interviews, the athlete admitted that he often annoyed his parents and grew up as a restless child. Sergey became interested in sports in early childhood: mom and dad decided that boxing would become the best view sports for such an active offspring. However, Sergey did not like “waving his fists”.

Some time later, Ustyugov tries his hand at biathlon. Skiing and target shooting appealed to the novice athlete much more than boxing gloves and the ring. The choice has been made. Soon Sergei was already ahead of his peers in speed and accuracy. There was a dream to win serious sports peaks. Interestingly, Sergei's parents were displeased with the choice of their son: training began to distract from studies. However, Sergei himself was determined to move forward.

When Ustyugov was 11 years old, the coach suggested that the boy try cross-country skiing. Sergei did not immediately agree, but decided to heed the advice of his mentor. The first steps in the new sport were not very successful, but after some time Ustyugov already showed enviable results, representing his native city in children's and youth races.

skiing

Quite quickly, the name of Sergei Ustyugov got into the coveted list of candidates for the youth team of the country. Perhaps this moment can be considered the beginning of professional sports biography skier. Ustyugov is included in the national team and successfully performs at the world championship.

The sports season of 2011-2012 was marked for Sergey Ustyugov by the World Championship, which was held in Turkey. Here the athlete seriously declared himself, taking first place in all races. In the same season, Ustyugov performed no less brilliantly at international competitions in Estonia, which earned him a place in the first Russian team.

It seemed that the skier's career would continue to develop just as smoothly, but the next season (2012-2013) prepared an unpleasant surprise for Ustyugov. Sergei moved from the youth division to the youth division, the level of rivals increased, and the skier failed all the races in which he participated. However, sports stubbornness did not allow the young man to give up, and Sergey partially rehabilitated, finishing the season with a victory in the skiathlon for 30 kilometers and a bronze medal in the team relay.

In 2014, Sergei, as part of the Russian team, went to the first Olympic Games in Sochi. Even before the start of the competition, world experts were inclined to believe that Sergei Ustyugov would become the favorite of this season. However, the athlete did not justify the hopes of coaches and fans: Ustyugov finished the single sprint in fifth position. Later, the skier admitted to reporters that the rivals turned out to be stronger than he expected, and that ahead is a long work on the mistakes.

And this work, apparently, was really done. A year later, Sergei Ustyugov and Alexei Petukhov brought the World Cup gold from the Estonian city of Otepää. In addition, Sergey won bronze at the competitions in Rybinsk and became the second in the team standings.

2016 was also a successful year for Sergei Ustyugov. The athlete added to his own piggy bank a bronze medal of the Tour de Ski championship, a victory in the mass start of the World Cup, a silver medal in the multi-day race Tour of Canada.

The 2016-2017 season turned out to be no less significant: January began with the Tour de Ski. The first five stages Sergey Ustyugov was unconditionally in the lead, and only the sixth race finished second, losing two seconds to the Norwegian Martin Sundby. The last race Sergei Ustyugov went flawlessly, leaving his rivals behind and winning the coveted "gold" of the competition.

It should be noted that Sergey Ustyugov became the second Russian to win the Tour de Ski multi-day race. First gold medal a skier brought it to Russia (in the 2012-2013 season). In addition, Ustyugov overtook the previous favorite of the competition, Martin Sundby, in terms of the number of stages of the tour won in a row.

The 2017 season did not end for Sergei Ustyugov: the skier went to the Finnish Lahti for the World Championship, from where he brought two “gold” and three silver medals.

The athlete himself has repeatedly admitted in an interview that he owes his own success to two factors. Firstly, these are suitable physical data that were inherited from birth (Sergey Ustyugov's height is 1.84 m, and his weight is 81 kg). And secondly, purposefulness and sports ambition, which makes you forget about fatigue and misses and continue to train.

Personal life

Little is known about the personal life of Sergei Ustyugov. The athlete prefers not to advertise matters of the heart, rightly believing that the relationship concerns only two. For several years, Sergei met with Elena Soboleva. The girl is also a skier. However, there is no information about the details of the novel and the separation of young people.

Fans of the athlete can only follow the news and photos on Instagram and others in social networks in the hope of finding out who became the happy chosen one of Sergei Ustyugov.

Sergey Ustyugov now

Now Sergey Ustyugov plans to repeat the success of the past season, preparing for the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang. The athlete is the favorite in the personal sprint, in addition, great hopes are placed on Ustyugov in the skiathlon stage. The skier will also have a traditional team relay race and several classic and freestyle races.

In total, the Russian national cross-country skiing team in 2018 will include 8 women and 12 men. In addition to Ustyugov, Stanislav Retivykh, Gleb Volzhentsev, Nikita Kryukov and other skiers will go to Pyeongchang. As Sergei Ustyugov admitted, he grew up as a bully, and if it weren’t for sports, then his fate could be completely different: “I just don’t communicate with some childhood friends. Someone was in prison. Someone is in prison. And I was able to rebuild. Sports rebuilt me. I studied very poorly. Very much. My mother told me: "Quiet with sports." Now I understand that if it were not for sports, I would have ended up like my childhood friends - in prison or worse. "

From an early age, he was distinguished by great diligence in training, determination and perseverance in achieving his goal. He himself said: "As a child, I had a very specific and conscious dream - to get into the national team of the country. In general, having achieved one goal, I set myself new ones."

At the same time, Sergei has a difficult character, due to excessive freedom-loving, he could stay out of sports: “The main negative in me is my character. And the main positive ... is also my character ... From my first training camp they wanted to kick me out "I wrote three explanatory notes. Violation of the regime, and all that. I didn't like that they put pressure on me," he recalled.

The first big success came to him in 2011 when Sergey Ustyugov won gold in the sprint at the junior world championship in cross-country skiing in Otepää (Estonia). On February 6, 2011, he made his debut at the World Cup and at the same time for the first time got into the top ten at one of the stages (in the relay).

According to Ustyugov, skiing for him is a lifestyle, not a means of earning money: "I never thought that I came to skiing in order to purely earn money. I don't go to work".

In May 2014, it was announced that Sergei Ustyugov was moving from the remote Russian national team led by Oleg Perevozchikov to a separate group of the Russian national team led by the Swiss-German duo of coaches Reto Burgermeister and Isabelle Knaute.

In January 2015, also together with Alexei Petukhov, he won the team sprint at the World Cup in Otepää. At the stage in Rybinsk, he took 2nd place in the freestyle sprint and 3rd place in the individual 15 km freestyle race.

He performed superbly at all stages of the stage race: he won the first 5 stages and at the sixth stage (15 km CS, mass start) he took 2nd place, losing 2.2 seconds to Martin Sundby. Before the last seventh stage, Sergey had the first position and 1 min 12 sec advantage over the nearest of the pursuers, Norwegian Martin Sundby. Having confidently completed the last race uphill Alp de Cermis, Sergey Ustyugov kept the handicap and won the Tour. Thus, Ustyugov became the second Russian skier after Alexander Legkov to win the Tour de Ski. Sergey Ustyugov also set a record for the number of victories in a row at the stages of one round - 5. On one of the last climbs, Sundby accelerated, but broke his stick. Thus, Sergei Ustyugov won the world title for the first time in his career.

On February 26, Sergei competed in the team sprint in the classic style, along with two-time world champion 31-year-old Nikita Kryukov. At the last stage, Ustyugov fled from Russia. With 30 seconds to go, he was fourth behind Emil Iversen of Norway, Iivo Niskanen of Finland and 2017 World Champion Federico Pellegrino of Italy in the individual sprint. At the same time, the Norwegian and Finn were ahead, while the Russian and Italian skiers were somewhat behind. On the rollout to the stadium, the Finn drove up close to the Norwegian, and during the rebuilding to another Iversen track, the athletes collided. Both skiers fell, the Norwegian broke his stick, and Pellegrino and Ustyugov drove around the fallen rivals. At the finish line, Sergey undertook a powerful acceleration and confidently won gold, ahead of the Italian by 2.14 seconds, Niskanen finished third. Ustyugov won his second gold medal at the World Championships, and Kryukov became the first in the history of the Soviet and Russian sports three-time world champion.

Ustyugov missed the next race of the championship, 15 km with a separate start in the classic style. In the 4 × 10 km relay, Sergey ran the last stage. Russia was about 17 seconds behind Norway after 3 rounds, Ustyugov was able to close the gap to 4 seconds, but could not compete for the victory, having won his 2nd medal in relay races at the World Championships.

Approximately one kilometer before the finish line, the trio of Canadian Alex Harvey, Ustyugov and Sundby broke away from the main group. As a result of the final spurt, Harvey won the gold, Ustyugov became the second, and the Finn Matti Heikkinen won the bronze medal, Sundby was only the fifth.

According to the results of the entire tournament, Sergey Ustyugov repeated the record of the Norwegians Bjorn Delhi and Petter Nortug in the number of medals at one world championship - 5 medals (2 gold and 3 silver). “There are moments in the race when you have to step over yourself. It’s like a car, it reaches the red cutoff, after which the engine explodes. And you also have such a cutoff. And you cross it, even knowing that it is deadly. I brought myself to such a state. It all goes automatically: you wind up and drive. And you get high from such a state"- said Sergei Ustyugov.

A young man dressed in a national team costume gives an interview to the Russian Match TV channel in the lobby of the Scandic Vierumäki hotel.

Sergei Ustyugov has a long day behind him at the World Ski Championships in Lahti, Finland. It stretched out to the evening awards ceremony. Ustyugov patiently answers the questions of TV journalists, holding a silver medal won in the ski relay in his hands. The interview lasts half an hour, after which the hero of the track quickly gets up, but immediately notices a Finnish journalist waiting for him.

The skier's face darkens. Some athletes enjoy the spotlight, but the brightest star skiing Russia is not among them.

Fans of Ustyug who came to the World Ski Championships will be remembered as a joyfully smiling young man. However, behind the scenes, Ustyugov is a person who avoids the limelight. He would have gone to his home in Yekaterinburg with great pleasure immediately after the winning race.

“I don't like signing autographs or talking to the press. Sometimes after the competition I wait at the press conference for 15-20 minutes while my opponents talk to the fans and sign autographs. All this is not for me, ”Ustyugov told representatives of the Russian media before the start of the competition.

However, this season forced Ustyugov out of his comfort zone. Winning the prestigious Tour de Ski at the beginning of the year and five medals at the World Ski Championships in Lahti made him one of the most popular skiers in the world. At the same time, Ustyugov has become the main hope in cross-country skiing against Russia, which is suspected of doping.

Expectations and pressures, the result of which was success, turned the graduate of Western Siberia into a professional who understands that media attention is an inevitable component of big sport. So he sits down again on the soft chair of the hotel and tells his story to the newspaper Urheilusanomat.

Sergei Alexandrovich Ustyugov was born in 1992 in the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug. younger child in a family with three children, he grew up in the village of Mezhdurechensky, whose population was 10 thousand people. Ustyugov describes his family as completely ordinary and emphasizes that he does not want to talk about his father.

“My memories of my father are only negative. He hasn't lived with us for a long time. I love my mother very much. Now she is retired and continues to help me as much as possible, ”says Ustyugov.

Relations with his father broke off early. In early childhood, his father was replaced by an older brother who, like other members of the family, found it difficult to cope with a restless younger brother.

“We then lived on the outskirts of the city. I was a hooligan, fought a lot and studied poorly at school, ”says Ustyugov.

The family realized that the extra energy of a problem child had to be channeled somewhere. At the age of eight, Ustyugov began boxing, but soon the classes came to a standstill due to the strict discipline requirements that the coach made.

“After two months, the boxing coach punished me. On this, the desire to continue disappeared.

In 2001, Ustyugov's mother enrolled him on the advice of a friend in a local ski school. It was then that a man appeared in the boy's life, whom Ustyugov now calls the biggest secret of his success. Coach Ivan Bragin saw great potential in the naughty and took him under his wing. Bragin advised his ward to engage in cross-country skiing, although he, following the example of his friends, wanted to do biathlon.

“Ivan told me that I have a choice: to be a substitute in the junior biathlon team or to play in the first team of the ski team of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug. In the end, I believed him."

Bragin's fury at the very beginning of Ustyugov's career proved to be a turning point, after which the capricious problem child decided to settle down.

“I was in the regional training camp with coach Valery Pavlovich Sivkov. It was customary for us that for three violations of discipline they were expelled from the team. We had all sorts of conflicts, we did not go to bed on time or misbehaved. In the end, I was told that my tenure with the team was over."

But after the last training competition, in which Ustyugov performed brilliantly, the coaches nevertheless mitigated the punishment. When the boy returned home from the camp, Bragin found out about this incident and became furious.

“He said that I could achieve a lot, but with such actions I cross out everything for myself. Then I decided that I would train for real and develop.”

Devotion to his sport over the years has brought victories in national competitions, performances in the junior team of the national team, trips abroad and titles in international championships.

With age and experience, Ustyugov's character became softer, but the rebellious spirit familiar from childhood has not disappeared.

The head coach of the Russian ski team in 2011-2016, Swiss Reto Burgermeister, called Ustyugov the most talented athlete in the history of international skiing. The praise was followed by harsh criticism, because, according to Burgermeister, Ustyugov does not train enough and professionally.

Then the athlete accused Burgermeister and his colleague Isabel Knaute of excessive nit-picking and inability to find a common language with the athletes.

The conflict escalated to such an extent that the president of the Russian Ski Racing Federation, Elena Vyalbe, transferred Ustyugov, Evgeny Belov and Stanislav Volzhentsev to the group of coach Markus Cramer.

Subsequently, the contracts with Burgermeister and Knaute were terminated.

“With Kramer, our joint work is 100% successful. He listens to athletes, this is very important to me. I want to understand what each specific workout gives, ”says Ustyugov.

With a German coach, Ustyugov feels calmer, but the star skier does not deny himself the opportunity to criticize the coaching staff or teammates. Before the beginning team sprint at the World Championships in Lahti, Ustyugov told the press that his partner Nikita Kryukov should not have taken part in ski competitions in Lahti. The next day they celebrated the victory together.

“Sergey has his own characteristics, like any successful person. He arranges a showdown both where necessary and where it is not necessary, ”says Elena Vyalbe.

Ustyugov may publicly criticize his teammates and coaches, but goes out of his way to defend his teammates on the most important issues that concern the world of skiing.

Russia arrived at the World Championships in Lahti without the winner of the Sochi Olympics Alexander Legkov, world champions Maxim Vylegzhanin and Alexei Petukhov. They are temporarily suspended from participation in competitions.

Names Russian skiers sounded in the report of Professor Richard McLaren (Richard McLaren). The report spoke about the manipulation of doping samples of athletes during the Sochi 2014 Olympics.

Scandals recent years gave rise to great doubts about the Russian skiing system. Ustyugov knows about it.

“The world has been divided in half: into those who believe us and those who do not believe us. I want to thank those who support us, ”Ustyugov told the press on the opening day of the championship in Lahti.

Ustyugov clearly states his position. He emphasizes that his friends and teammates are not involved in the Sochi doping scandals.

Passionate rhetoric, team mindset and international success made Ustyugov a national hero, defender of Russia's ski glory. In a country where sport is of great importance for the political leadership and the whole society, great hopes were placed on Ustyugov.

“I tried to protect Sergey before the start of the championship, saying that there are other athletes on the team. Many people think that Sergey should win this or that competition. But he doesn’t owe anything to anyone,” emphasizes Elena Vyalbe.

Ustyugov acknowledges the burden of hope placed on him, but says he is proud of his life.

“I enjoy skiing, I do what I love. It looks like everything is working now. What could be better?

But in this life-dream, Ustyugov needs his main support. The skiing star says he takes his former coach Bragin. The athlete can also consult with Bragin on personal matters. Sergei Ustyugov meets with skier of the national team Elena Soboleva.

“I am grateful to Ivan for a lot. I can tell him everything I feel. He helps not only me, but my whole family. He was the one who got me on this path of life."

Sergey Ustyugov is a young sportsman. It is rightfully considered one of the most promising skiers of our time. Despite his age, he managed to win several significant awards.

early years

Sergei was born in April 1992 in the Khanty-Mansiysk Okrug. As a child, he was an active child and often caused problems for his parents. I was never particularly interested in sports, but already in early age went to the boxing section. He showed pretty good results, but he did not like to wave his fists at all. The guy decides to try himself in biathlon, and he liked it. He will be happy to attend training and become one of the best among his peers. After some time, he realizes that he would like to connect his life with skiing. The mother of the future champion was against it, because the training did not allow him to fully concentrate on his studies. Despite everything, Sergey Ustyugov continued to study and hoped to grow into a real professional.

At the age of eleven, he gets the opportunity to go directly to cross-country skiing. The coach who suggested this to him was sure that here the guy would be able to fully realize his potential and be able to quickly break into the district team. For some time, the young man pondered the proposal and, as a result, agreed. Initially, things didn't go well for him. Due to the complex nature of the athlete, he often clashed with the new mentor, and therefore did not demonstrate the expected results. After some time, he completely changes his attitude to business and begins to consistently perform at various children's and youth competitions. That's how Sergei Ustyugov started. Photos from his first competition today occupy an important place in the home collection of awards.

Career in "youth" and "youth"

After successful performances at the district championships, Sergey is included in the list of candidates for the Russian youth team. Very soon he was enrolled in the national team, and the athlete performed quite successfully at the junior world championship.

In the 2011-2012 season Sergei Ustyugov (skier), whose biography is full of many different episodes, goes to the World Cup in Turkey. He managed to demonstrate an amazing result and became the first in absolutely all starts in which he performed. In the same year he takes part in international tournament in Estonia. Here he again showed himself excellently, after which he was enrolled in the first team.

In 2012-2013 the skier had a rather difficult time, because he had to move from "boys" to "youth". There was a completely different level of athletes here, and he fully felt it at the very first competitions in Liberec. This tournament took place in 2013, and he completely failed. It is noteworthy that all this happened in classic sprint where he had no equal before. A few days later, the young man is fully rehabilitated and becomes the first in the "cutting" for fifteen kilometers and wins the skiathlon for thirty kilometers. Even then, they began to talk about the Russian as one of the most promising athletes in Europe.

adult career

A rather interesting person is Sergey Ustyugov (skier). His biography, although not so rich due to his age, nevertheless, there is something to read in it. A career at the highest level deserves special attention.

The debut at the World Cup took place in 2011. Even then he gets into the top ten. In the world championship in 2013, he won bronze in the team relay. Unfortunately, in the individual race he managed to become only forty-seventh.

At the stages of the World Cup, he first climbed the podium in December 2013 in Davos. Sergey Ustyugov became the third in the sprint. A few months later, he took first place in the Czech Republic.

In 2015, together with Petukhov, he won the gold of the World Cup in the city of Otepää. In Rybinsk, he became second with the team and third in the individual freestyle race. In 2016 he went to the Tour de Ski, where he eventually became the owner of an honorary bronze medal.

At the championships of Russia represents the sports society "Dynamo". The skier is trained by the Swiss specialist Reto Burgermeiser.

Performances at the Olympic Games

For the first time Sergey went to similar tournament in 2014. He was one of the favorites. Leading world experts agreed with this. Absolutely everyone was sure that the Russian would at least finish his performances with medals. Unfortunately, it was not possible to justify the hopes. The young man made it to the finals of the single sprint without any problems, where he became only fifth. To the credit of the athlete, he did not look for excuses and agreed that the rivals were really stronger.

Sergey Ustyugov: height, weight

To understand why a twenty-three-year-old skier shows such successful results, you should definitely familiarize yourself with his physical data. It weighs quite a bit - only eighty-one kilograms. For strength athletes this figure is not the highest. It is thanks to this that he manages to develop high speed in sprint races. It is worth noting that Sergey Ustyugov is rather tall. His height is one hundred and eighty-four centimeters. Thanks to this growth, he has a good range of hands, which allows him to always be among the leaders.

Brief description of personality

The young man strives to always be the best in everything. It is thanks to this character trait that he became what he is today. In fact, he has absolutely all the qualities that will help him repeatedly win the world championships, continental championships, as well as the Olympic Games.

I made friends with physical education early, although at first I didn’t feel much enthusiasm for visiting the gym. He started with the boxing section, but quickly lost interest in classes. Then he switched to biathlon and realized that skiing with a rifle behind his back was much more interesting to him than waving his fists. Serezha got a taste and decided to associate the coming years with this sport. The mother of the future star categorically objected to this intention of her son, because she believed that full-fledged training would negatively affect his school performance. However, the young athlete showed character and insisted on his own.

Career start

Sergei Ustyugov has established himself as a skier who can handle any distance. At the age of 11, at the suggestion of a coach, he concentrated directly on racing. The new mentor was able to discern in the boy those abilities that could make him professional athlete. But, at first, Sergei could not boast of success on the ski track. The reason for this was the difficult nature of the teenager, who did not obey the experienced master in everything. But the coach showed patience and, as a result, the ward began to show the results that were expected of him. In the next two seasons, the promising skier had a chance to give everything one hundred percent. It's time to step into big sport, and the transition to it was not easy for many young men. Fully felt more high level rivals and Sergey Ustyugov, having extremely unsuccessfully ran the sprint at the competition in Liberec. There was reason to give up, because this distance has always been a crown for Sergey. But he continued to prepare for the next starts. And he proved to everyone that it was not in vain that the mentors invested their strength and skills in him. The athlete climbed the podium of many prestigious international championships and got into the top ten on the planet.

However, Sergei Ustyugov has not yet won a victory in the most important competitions, although he had the opportunity to do so. In 2014, he went to the Winter Olympics in Sochi as a participant to whom many predicted, if not “gold”, then at least “silver” or “bronze”. But fate decreed otherwise - Russian athlete crossed the finish line only fifth. An unfortunate incident prevented a more significant result. In front of Sergei, two rivals suddenly collapsed on the snow, and he was unable to avoid a collision. The fall left no chance for victory. The disappointment of Ustyugov, and with him the fans, knew no bounds. But they, along with Sergei's girlfriend skier Elena Soboleva, do not lose hope.
